You CAN Decorate For The Seasons

If I can decorate for the seasons, then you can too! I am no home decor expert - not even close. Also, I'm lazy and don't want decorating to be too complicated. And I'm thrifty so I don't want to go out and spend a lot of money on decor items for my home.

Now, some of you are truly gifted at home decor and design! I would love it if you'd share your best tips for the rest of us in the comments {even a link to a great post about design}!

Fall

Growing up, I did not experience seasonal decor other than a Christmas tree and wreath and garland here and there. Even after getting married, my "decor" consisted of pics from oak stores on the wall and framed pics of family along with some knick-knacks on shelves and tops of surfaces. And then I started blogging over 5 years ago.

Once I started blogging, I discovered some blogs that did decorate seasonally and I began to get inspired to do the same. {Shout-out to Melissa from The Inspired Room who was really the main person to get me going!} My first attempt at Fall decorating was called The Reluctant Fall Nester and here's a pic...

I went from never decorating for the seasons to decorating for Fall, Christmas, Winter, Spring, and Summer. I had boxes to store each season's items. After a while, that became overwhelming for me. I have decided that I'm happiest having my house one way all year, BUT with seasonal touches here and there.

Winter

Spring
It can truly be so simple! I often pull out dishes from china cabinets or cupboards and use them in decorating {the tray with the eggs above is an olive tray - a gift from a friend}. I use seasonal fruits & veggies. I use framed pics or put greeting cards in frames. I use plants or flowers or even dead leaves and branches from the yard. I "shop my house" for decor items.

Summer
I've decided that my method of decorating is "by feel." I group items and rework them until it "feels" right. The colors and textures don't even have to match or be considered the "right" colors for the season.

Some of my favorite blogs for simple inspiration are The Inspired Room, Nesting Place, My Blessed Life, and Balancing Beauty and Bedlam {<---Got to meet Jen in person at Allume last year!}. These are ladies who keep it real, keep it fairly simple, fairly thrifty, and fun. They make me feel like it's possible for anybody to add the simple touches that make a house a home.

None of my centerpieces or decor are going to win any awards. But they are simple, thrifty, and make me happy. And I should mention that I only really put these touches out in my living room and dining room. The kitchen, family room and bedrooms basically stay the same all year. Less work for me that way - but do what makes you happy. Maybe you'd rather have a little seasonal display to look at in your bedroom. Or maybe you prefer the kitchen {since we spend SO much time there}!

If you have never decorated for the seasons, I challenge you to try something today. I know you can find something in your yard and in your cupboards and put together a touch of Fall for your home {or a touch of a different season for my International readers!}. Do try it and come back to tell me how it went!

  1. I like your little touches. It doesn't take much to change things up. The only time my kitchen gets decorated is at Christmas time. I really go all out at Christmas. But throughout the year I keep it mainly to my dining room and living room. The bedrooms and other areas stay pretty much the same. I've really enjoyed having a mantel to decorate.
Big shopping the house helps you discover things you forgot you had size hugs to you!

    1. Thank you my friend! Yes, I know you go all out for Christmas - LOL! Maybe it helps make up for my lack of decorating at that time {maybe this year I'll do better???}!
